30 June 2020, meeting with UDIA National: Along with my other state counterparts, I participated in a meeting with UDIA National President, Simon Basheer, to discuss the HomeBuilder Grant. The grant was a welcomed first step towards supporting the property development industry recover from the COVID-19 crisis. Work needs to be done to support the typologies and buyers that are not supported within the strictures of HomeBuilder.
1 July 2020, meeting with Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, Hon. Cameron Dick MP: I met with the Treasurer and discussed a range of matters impacting our industry, including the Institute’s recommendations for demand-side stimulus outline in Operation Bounce Back and the importance of OSR engagement with industry, prior to the finalisation of eligibility criteria in Queensland.
7 July 2020, Toowoomba Branch Update: Along with Toowoomba Branch President, Stephen Bowers and State President, Warwick Bible, I participated in a webinar briefing with Toowoomba branch members. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, the Toowoomba branch continues to support members in creating better communities for Queenslanders.
7 July 2020, meeting with Department of Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs: Along with Anna Cox (Institute Director of Policy, Strategy and Regional Services), I met with Natalie Wilde (Deputy Director General of Local Government). We discussed potential methods to help guide interactions between our industry and elected officials in a post-Belcarra and Integrity Bill world. I am so appreciative of Natalie’s willingness to collaborate with the Institute. You can hear more from Natalie on this issue at our upcoming webinar, Rules of Engagement.
8 July 2020, Bundaberg Branch Update: Along with Bundaberg Branch President, Nathan Freeman and State President, Warwick Bible, I also participated in a webinar briefing with Bundaberg branch members.
14 July 2020, 2020 Awards for Excellence Judges Information Session: I am thrilled that the Institute can proceed with the 2020 Mitchell Brandtman Awards for Excellence and am so grateful for our volunteer judges. Our industry has proven to be resilient in the face of adversity and the calibre of entries in this year’s Awards is no different.
14 July 2020, meeting with Jason Camden, Economic Development Queensland: I meet regularly with Jason Camden who is Acting General Manager of Economic Development Queensland to discuss the ways that our industry can work with EDQ to create wonderful communities for Queenslanders.
15 July 2020, Research Insiders presentation with Neumann Developments: Along with Chelsea van Riet (the Institute’s Director of Research and Marketing) I presented the findings of our research on internal amenity. By better understanding what consumers want at each stage of the lifecycle, we can tailor homes to better suit Queensland families.
16 July 2020, meeting with Richard Ferrett, Brisbane City Council: I met with Mr Ferrett, of the Lord Mayor’s Office. I meet regularly with him to discuss how we can work with council to create a better Brisbane.
17 July 2020, meeting with Brisbane City Council: Along with other industry representatives I met with Brisbane City Council representatives and discussed the opportunities and challenges facing the industry in Brisbane.
20 July 2020, meeting with Kerry Doss, Deputy Director General, Planning: I meet regularly with Mr Doss to discuss the issues faced by our members across the State.
21 July 2020, Branch Presidents’ Day: I presented to our Branch Presidents on the work of the Research Foundation, including the findings of the recent Urbis report into the efficacy of stimulus during the GFC and what lessons we can apply to boost the recovery phase of the current crisis.
27 July 2020, Planning System Reference Group meeting: Chaired by the Deputy Director-General of Planning, the Reference Group includes representatives from several stakeholder groups. The purpose of the Group is to act as a sounding board for potential changes to policy and process as well as providing feedback from our members.
28 July 2020, meeting with Paul Kennedy, Two Thirds Sky: I met with researcher, Paul Kennedy, to finalise the research stimulus that will form the basis of the first round of qualitative research for the Industry Leaders Research Group. Empowered and informed by the Group, the first round of research for 2020 will focus on perceptions of housing affordability.
29 July 2020, meeting with Housing Action Lab: I met with representatives of the Housing Action Lab. The purpose of the Lab is to explore narratives, partnerships, and business models that is designed to spur real action in the housing sector.
29 July 2019, meeting with Mosaic Property Group: I met with Marina Vit of Mosaic Property Group. Mosaic have been staunch supporters of the Institute for some time and members of the Industry Leaders Research Group since 2016 and it is always incredibly valuable to glean information from Mosaic’s on-the-ground experience.
